We spoke with Richard Firmstone, Operations Director at YASA, to explore how the axial-flux electric motor manufacturer is tackling the biggest engineering challenges in the EV industry.
YASA’s axial-flux technology is known for its exceptional power density, delivering high performance in a package significantly smaller and lighter than conventional electric motors. Richard explained how this compact, high-output design allows YASA to solve complex packaging issues for customers who need extreme performance within incredibly tight spatial constraints. When every millimetre matters, axial-flux motors become a game-changing solution.
YASA also prides itself on the ability to industrialise axial-flux technology at scale, something many others have attempted but struggled to achieve. The combination of high-performance engineering and efficient, reliable manufacturing has seen YASA partner with some of the world’s most prestigious automotive brands. One standout example is Ferrari.
For models like the SF90 and the 296, Ferrari approached YASA with performance requirements it believed were nearly impossible to meet within the available space. Through close collaboration, YASA delivered motors that not only hit those challenging targets but helped enable Ferrari’s broader electrification strategy. Today, around 75% of Ferrari’s portfolio is electrified.
Looking ahead, Richard discussed the future of capacity and demand. YASA is on track to deliver 25,000 motors per year, with built-in room for expansion without additional investment. As the EV market shifts and accelerates, he sees major opportunities for YASA to grow, innovate and lead the next wave of electric propulsion.
