David Roberts, Chair of Evtec Automotive, believes manufacturing leaders must address growing workforce concerns around AI and technological change by focusing on communication, leadership and skills development.
Speaking at Smart Manufacturing Week, David highlighted that while manufacturing has always faced disruption, the current wave of technological advancement is unique due to its scale, speed and the uncertainty it creates among employees. When discussing the key theme of impact of AI on the workforce, David acknowledged that many employees fear automation and AI could threaten their jobs but argued that businesses must tackle these concerns head-on rather than avoid them.
He encouraged manufacturers to embrace AI early, allowing employees at all levels to experiment with the technology, identify champions within the organisation and build familiarity before developing detailed strategic plans. One of the biggest mistakes manufacturers can make is treating AI solely as an IT or technology project. Instead, it should be viewed as a business-wide transformation that affects culture, operations and people.
David stressed that any productivity gains generated by AI should be reinvested into the business through skills development, new capabilities and growth opportunities rather than being seen purely as cost-saving measures.
Communication was another major focus, and David highlighted the importance of leaders spending time on the shop floor, engaging directly with employees and being honest about both the opportunities and challenges associated with technological change. Regular dialogue, transparency and visible leadership are essential to maintaining trust and workforce engagement during periods of uncertainty.
It is also vital that manufacturers invest in leadership development; strong leaders create adaptable organisations capable of responding to crises and change. Looking ahead, David believes manufacturers must continue investing in people, technology adoption and continuous learning if they are to remain competitive.
“Investment in machinery depreciates. Investment in leadership doesn’t; it will just result in creating better leaders.”
