An AkzoNobel consortium has been awarded £500,000 in funding by the Technology Strategy Board to co-fund a two-year collaborative research project to develop new marine fouling control coatings.

The TSB provided the figure as part of its Materials Innovation for a Sustainable Economy competition, which encourages the development and application of sustainable materials, products and processes through collaborative research programmes.

The project will be overseen by AkzoNobel International Paint and run in collaboration with novel polymer specialist Revolymer, and academic institutions the University of Liverpool and Newcastle University.

David Williams, RD&I director of AkzoNobel Marine & Protective Coatings, said the project presents it with the opportunity to contribute towards developing new teachnologies.

“This project provides us with the opportunity to use our collective expertise to help us develop innovative and sustainable fouling control technology delivering reduced fuel costs and emissions over even longer service periods,” he said.
