The Manufacturing Technology Centre is holding an apprentice open event on the evening of 6 December to provide potential trainees with an insight into the centre’s apprenticeship programme.
The Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) hopes school pupils be attracted by the apprenticeship opportunities available in its Advanced Manufacturing Training Centre (AMTC).
Based at Ansty Park, the MTC says it’s “making a significant contribution towards solving the skills shortage prevalent in manufacturing for many years.”
The MTC hopes to persuade school pupils to pursue a career in manufacturing. Teachers and careers officers are also encouraged to attend the event.
The AMTC is a flagship facility for the advanced apprenticeship programme. Apprentices will have the opportunity to learn the latest technology in areas such as intelligent automation, metrology and advanced manufacture. They will be also able to test and develop their skills with partner employers.
The MTC provides integrated manufacturing system solutions for customers of all sizes. They work across multiple sectors including the automotive, aerospace, and food & drink, as well as the oil & gas industry.
Coventry has a long heritage of manufacturing, especially within the automotive sector. The famous motorcycle manufacturer Triumph was based in the city. Jaguar Land Rover’s headquarters are in the Coventry suburb of Whitley.
Paul Rowlett, managing director of the AMTC said, “Our purpose is to seed the manufacturing sector with a pipeline of capable engineering technicians…The open event will give potential apprentices the chance to learn everything they need about our programmes.
Established in 2010, the MTC was set up as an independent Research & Technology Organisation (RTO). Its stated objective is to “bridge the ‘valley of death’ between academia and industry.” The centre is part of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult (HVMC), which is supported by Innovate UK.
The MTC now has more than 100 members from SMEs to some of the biggest brands in the world such as Unilever, Rolls-Royce, BAE Systems, and Siemens.
Over 700 people work with the organisation. Though research and development is a major focus, the group also focuses on training, advanced manufacturing management and factory design.
