Manufacturing and engineering represented in New Year Honours 2024
The New Year Honours List 2024 was announced over the festive break, marking the achievements and service of extraordinary people across the UK, and the manufacturing/engineering sector wasn’t without representation.

Nearly 15,000 Aircraft backlog reflects continued, record-breaking buoyancy of aerospace sector – ADS Group
November marked the fourth consecutive record-breaking backlog of aircraft orders, which now totals almost 15,000. The latest data highlights a 354% increase on November 2022’s figures for orders placed November 2023, with a 10% year-on-year growth in the backlog.
A new report from ADS Group, the trade association for aerospace, defence, security, and space organisations, highlights that year to date, 2,657 aircraft orders have been placed. While single-aisle aircraft account for more than 2,000 of those on order, 2023 represents a record-high for wide-body aircraft at 586 wide-body aircraft orders placed year to date. UK Manufacturing PMI: Industry downturn deepens as year ends
The UK manufacturing industry downturn deepened in December, with output, new orders and employment all falling, according to the latest S&P Global / CIPS UK Manufacturing PMI®.
Ending the year on a decidedly weak note, industry witnessed an accelerated downturn in production volumes, fuelled by declining new work intakes both domestically and from abroad. Tighter inventory policies at manufacturers were also cited as a reason for the tenth successive month of production downturn. More via The Manufacturer
Airbus releases statement on Japan Airlines Flight JAL516
Airbus has released a statement on Japan Airlines Flight JAL516, which collided with another plane at Haneda International Airport on 2 January 2024.
As well as expressing sorrow for the loss of life, Airbus also said it will provide technical assistance to the Bureau d’Enquêtes et d’Analyses (BEA) of France and to the Japan Transport Safety Board (JTSB) in charge of the investigation. More via Airbus
BAE Systems announces partnership with UK-based charity, REACT
BAE Systems has announced a partnership with REACT, a UK-based disaster relief and humanitarian aid charity.
The Company has fully funded the charity’s £30,000 UK Flood Appeal to enable it to recruit, train and equip teams of volunteer flood responders across the country. More via BAE Systems
Nissan EV Among World’s Great Transport Innovations Of The Last 90 Years
The world’s first mass-market electric vehicle has secured its place among some of the world’s greatest transport innovations, according to a survey conducted by Nissan to mark its 90th birthday this week.
The Nissan commissioned OnePoll survey of 2,000 UK adults saw the Leaf in 19th place on a list of other significant transport innovations of the last 90 years. Concorde’s first passenger-carrying supersonic flight; the first flight of a commercial jet airliner; and the opening of the channel tunnel topped the list. More via Nissan
Waste recycling specialist invests in new JCB 140X tracked excavator
A leading Midlands waste recycling specialist has invested in a brand new JCB 140X tracked excavator for sorting and loading waste at its materials recycling facility.
MRW Waste Recycling Ltd has bought the new model for pre-sorting waste and loading the picking line at the company’s Stratford-upon-Avon site where it recycles construction and demolition materials. More via JCB
