Government announces £18.5m in funding to strengthen UK’s connected and automated mobility supply chain
The government has announced that £18.5m is being made available to UK companies to strengthen the capabilities of the UK’s connected and automated mobility supply chain.
Thirteen projects will improve the safety and security of self-driving vehicles, by filling specific technology gaps, improving performance, reliability and scale-up opportunities in the UK and globally.
The grants, part of the Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles Connected and Automated Mobility programme, will complement £81 million investment for CAM technology. Find out more at GOV UK
Food giant Kerry on track to meet Net Zero goals and achieve cost savings thanks to innovative cloud solution
RS Industria has helped global food giant Kerry work towards its Net Zero goals through a modular approach to condition monitoring and asset data analysis, which has led to the firm driving down energy and water consumption, maintaining environmental compliance and achieving significant cost savings.
The RS Industria team worked with Kerry engineers to design a plant monitoring system to create a single point of asset insight to address the lack of operational visibility that Kerry had of its waste water plant. Find out more at The Manufacturer
August boost for EV market but regulatory uncertainty threatens future ambitions
The new car market grew 24.4% in August with 85,657 new vehicles registered, according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). While August is typically a quieter month with many buyers choosing to wait until the September numberplate change, an increase of 16,799 units means the sector is now entering a second year of growth. Hitachi Rail achieves ‘world-first’ in environmental standards
Hitachi Rail has become the world’s first train manufacturer to attain the rigorous PAS 2080 carbon reduction standard for the design, manufacture, and operation of the 100% electric HS2 fleet.
The British Institute of Standard (BSI) was able to award the standard following verification of Hitachi Rail’s whole-life carbon analysis of the fleet, which includes assessment of carbon management or reduction during design, procurement, manufacturing and operations. Alexander Dennis supports Centrebus growth with third Enviro200 quartet within a year
Alexander Dennis, a subsidiary of NFI Group Inc., has announced that it has taken a further order for four Enviro200 single deck buses from English operator Centrebus, following two separate deliveries of four buses each over the past year.
Privately-owned Centrebus is a major provider of bus services across the Midlands and neighbouring counties through its direct operation and the associated High Peak Buses, D&G Bus and Chaserider fleets. Find out more at Alexander Dennis
UK Hydrogen Alliance established to accelerate zero carbon aviation and bring a £34bn annual benefit to the country
A group of leading companies in the UK aviation and renewable energy sectors including easyJet, Rolls-Royce, Airbus, Ørsted, GKN Aerospace and Bristol Airport, have today established the Hydrogen in Aviation (HIA) alliance to accelerate the delivery of zero carbon aviation. HIA will work to ensure the UK capitalises on the huge opportunity hydrogen presents to both the aviation industry and country as a whole.
While there are various options for decarbonising the aviation sector, including sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), synthetic fuels or batteries, HIA believes that more attention should be paid to the potential of the direct use of hydrogen. Find out more at GKN Aerospace
New IOE&IT report finds closing export gap in nations and regions key to ensuring UK remains services superpower
A new report has been launched looking to investigate and address regional disparities in the export of services throughout the UK, and has found that significant improvements in connectivity, education and immigration policy are needed to close regional gaps across the country.
The Institute of Export & International Trade (IOE&IT) report found that Cumbria, Lincolnshire, Cornwall and the Scilly Isles were the lowest performing regions, accounting for only 0.37%, 0.28% and 0.26% of total UK services exports. Find out more at The Manufacturer
Babcock receives approval from Lloyd’s Register for two new systems
Babcock’s LGE business, the world leader in liquefied gas solutions, has received Approval in Principle (AiP) from Classification Society Lloyd’s Register for its multi-fuel gas supply and CO2 cargo handling systems ecoFGSS-FLEX® and ecoCO2®.
The AiPs were awarded to Babcock’s LGE business during Gastech 2023 in Singapore and represents another milestone in the company’s environmental technology development. Find out more at Babcock International
Mocean Energy gets £3m EU boost for large new wave energy device
Wave energy developer Mocean Energy has secured over £3m EU funding to develop and deploy a 250kW wave machine, a considerable increase in scale compared to its current 10kW prototype.
The large-scale wave energy device – named Blue Horizon 250 – will be manufactured in Scotland and deployed in a grid-connected berth at the European Marine Energy Centre’s (Emec) Billia Croo test site in Orkney. Find out more at IMechE
