UK charity makes largest private pledge to heritage skills training in history
UK charity the Hamish Ogston Foundation has announced nearly £29m in crucial funding to heritage skills training in the UK and around the Commonwealth, marking the largest private commitment to the cause in history.

Swansea University event inspires next generation of manufacturing leaders
Local school pupils recently had the chance to learn about sustainability and manufacturing in south Wales at an event hosted at Swansea University.
In July 2023, Swansea University Bay Campus welcomed the Engineering Development Trust (EDT) to deliver the first South Wales Challenger Day workshop on Innovation and Sustainability, funded by Innovate UK.
A total of 80 KS3 students from Llangatwg Community School, Bryn Celynnog School, Ebbw Fawr Learning Community, Olchfa School and Willows High School participated in this inaugural event. Find out more on Swansea University
Modified JCB excavator proves literally ground breaking for Scottish ground engineering specialist
A Scottish ground engineering specialist is using a specially modified JCB X Series tracked excavator for its piling and foundations work on new housing developments.
Akela Ground Engineering – part of the Glasgow-based Akela Group – has purchased the new machine which comprises a JCB 220X base machine fitted with BSP-TEX Ltd JX25-8 piling rig. The all-British-built combination delivers a mobile, self-erecting, 28-tonne piling rig capable of driving in steel, wood or concrete piles up to 8 metres in length. Find out more on JCB
University of Sheffield professor to help grow UK semiconductor sector
An academic from the University of Sheffield is set to help the government boost the UK semiconductor sector, as part of a new advisory panel that held its first meeting last week (3 August 2023).
Professor John Goodenough from the University’s Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering – a world-leader in semiconductor R&D – is part of an expert advisory panel that will help the government ensure a secure supply of chips that are an essential part of every electronic device. Made Smarter grant to fuel innovation at manufacturer
Period Mouldings Ltd (PML), a manufacturer of period wood-based moulded products, has been awarded a £20,000 Government grant to revolutionise its production capabilities through digital innovation.

UK’s first carpet recycling factory leads the charge against emissions and waste
The UK’s inaugural carpet recycling factory, working on reducing carbon emissions in the flooring industry, has been established in Northampton under the name Innovate Recycle.
The factory, which cost approximately £10m to establish, operates at the Lodge Farm Industrial Estate in Dusto and adopts a comprehensive approach to handling waste materials, sorting, and segregation. Find out more on Apparel Resources
