Turkish Airlines to expand fleet with 220 Airbus aircraft
Turkish Airlines will expand its fleet with 220 Airbus aircraft, the engines and wings of which are made in the UK.
The deal is good news for the UK manufacturing industry as all of the wings for the Airbus aircraft will be designed in Filton, Bristol, and assembled in Broughton, North Wales, supporting hundreds of manufacturing jobs in the UK aerospace supply chain. Moreover, the 70 A350 widebody aircraft are powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines, which are assembled and tested in Derby. More via The Manufacturer
Shetland island to house UK’s first vertical rocket launch spaceport
A former RAF base on a remote peninsula of Shetland Island has become the UK’s first licensed spaceport for vertical rocket launches. It will allow up to 30 satellites and other payloads to be launched into commercially valuable polar, sun-synchronous orbits, which are in high demand from satellite operators for communications and Earth observation. Maersk, Hapag-Lloyd pause Red Sea shipping activity following attacks
Shipping giants Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd have paused their activity in a part of the Red Sea until further notice following a number of recent attacks on vessels.
For manufacturers who rely on shipping for raw materials and components, the news comes at an already challenging time due to a severe drought in Panama which is expected to shift trade flows and push up freight costs.More via The Manufacturer
Hinkley C nuclear reactor roof lifted into place
Engineers have lifted a steel roof onto a building which will house the first of two nuclear reactors at Hinkley Point in Somerset.
Hundreds of people helped with the delicate operation to get the 245-tonne steel dome into position.
It means the first reactor can be installed next year, ready to be switched on in June 2027. More via BBC News
Sheffield manufacturer Tribosonics set to create 25 jobs
A fast-growing Sheffield tech firm is set to create 25 jobs following a £1.5m injection of cash.
Tribosonics says it will also invest in its apprenticeship scheme.
The firm makes sensors that measure friction in hi-tech machines. More via The Star
Snowdonia Space Centre secures UK Space Agency funding
Snowdonia Space Centre has recently secured £820,000 funding from the UK Space Agency under the Agencies Space Clusters Infrastructure Fund to support the development of a new Space Technology Centre at the former Llanbedr Airfield.
The centre will exploit the ideal location of the Snowdonia Space Centre, with its own immediate Danger Area and direct access to a larger Danger Area over Cardigan Bay, to provide a flight test range for rocket-powered test vehicles, near-space scientific flights, microgravity research and trials of re-entry vehicles and payload recovery systems.
