Manufacturing output stabilises but orders remain subdued – CBI Industrial Trends Survey
Manufacturers reported that output volumes were stable during the final three months of the year – the first time output hasn’t fallen since the quarter to July 2023, according to the CBI’s latest Industrial Trends Survey (ITS). Manufacturers expect output to rise marginally in the first three months of 2024.
Both total and export order books were reported as below normal in December, though they improved relative to the near-three year lows reached last month. More via CBI
BP pauses oil shipments through Red Sea after rebel attacks
BP has become the first oil major to pause all shipments through the Red Sea, citing a “deteriorating security situation” because of escalating Yemeni rebel attacks on ships passing through a route that handles about 10 per cent of global trade.
BP’s decision follows the news that Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd paused Red Sea shipping activity last week. More via Financial Times
BAE Systems supports food banks this winter
BAE Systems is donating more than £150,000 to help food banks across the UK provide for families and individuals in need this winter.
Working with volunteers in local communities where the Company operates across the UK, the donations will help fund emergency food parcels and ensure that goods can be safely stored, sorted and distributed. More via The Manufacturer

Leading pump manufacturer Selwood Pump Company Limited has made the West Midlands Net Zero Pledge to cut its environmental impact and help clients reduce their carbon footprint.
Hall Green-based Selwood Pump Company Limited, which supplies a wide range of pumps for diverse industry sectors including oil and car manufacturing, has taken on the pledge to reduce not just its own energy consumption but also the amount needed by clients who use their equipment. Flintshire apprentice awarded Wales Engineering Rising Star Apprentice of the Year award 2023
A Flintshire apprentice has been recognised for her outstanding achievements in the engineering sector.
Millie Francis-Owen, an electric engineering apprentice with Raytheon UK, based at their Broughton site, was awarded the Wales Engineering Rising Star Apprentice of the Year award for 2023 at a ceremony held by Make UK in Cardiff. More via The Leader
Sussex manufacturer invests £550k in expansion
A Sussex-based manufacturer and supplier of specialist rubber grommets has invested in a new production and distribution centre with the support of £550,000 from Lloyds Bank.
As demand from renewable sectors increases, Grommets Ltd is producing more products for use in solar panels and batteries for electric vehicles. More via The Manufacturer
