Manufacturing industry reacts to the Autumn Budget 2023

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt’s ‘Autumn Statement for Growth’ on Wednesday, November 22, highlighted tax cuts for both working individuals and British businesses.

The plan aims to strengthen the economy by increasing business investment by £20bn annually, promoting employment and implementing the largest work-related tax cut since the 1980s for 29 million workers.

Ground-breaking UK Export Finance deal secures huge investment in North-East England

UKEF and K-Sure have secured support worth £367 million for South Korean manufacturer SeAH Steel Holding’s construction of a wind tech factory near Redcar, in the Tees Valley.

The financing will secure inward investment which will create 750 jobs in Teesside and ensures construction of the world’s largest wind monopile factory in Redcar. More via GOV UK

Manufacturing output falls and order books deteriorate – CBI Industrial Trends Survey

Manufacturers reported that output volumes fell in the three months to November, disappointing expectations for expansion, according to the CBI’s latest Industrial Trends Survey.

Manufacturers expect output volumes to decline further into the new year.

A more subdued outlook for production comes as order books fell to their weakest level since the second COVID-19 lockdown in early 2021. Both total and export order books were reported as below normal in November, to the greatest extent since January and February 2021 respectively. More via CBI

Airbus awarded UK Space Agency grant to develop Space Catalyst in Stevenage

Airbus Defence and Space in the UK has been awarded £3.9m from the UK Space Agency (UKSA) to create a space and connectivity catalyst at its headquarters in Stevenage. Airbus will create a range of facilities at its 14 acre site available to new and existing space players to encourage growth in the wider space ecosystem.

The new Space Catalyst will be part of Airbus’ Community for Space Prosperity (CUSP) programme which aims to grow the activity of the UK space supply chain, research and outreach activities. More via Airbus

Sheffield Forgemasters welcomes Westminster nuclear report

Sheffield Forgemasters, the UK’s sole supplier of ultra-large, nuclear-grade forgings, has welcomed an All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) report on the future of nuclear energy in the UK.

The report highlights Sheffield Forgemasters’ 70+ years of manufacturing cast and forged components for nuclear applications and stresses the value of a UK-first supply chain for the next generation of nuclear power plants, with a domestic nuclear agenda exceeding that of any European country. Nissan to deliver boost for Sunderland after government EV talks

Nissan is to commit to manufacturing future electric versions of two of its best-selling models at its Sunderland plant after months of talks with the government.

Sky News can reveal that the giant Japanese car manufacturer will announce on Friday that it will build new electric Qashqai and Juke models at the site – a decision that will help safeguard thousands of jobs there. More via Sky News

JLR invests in vehicle security to reduce thefts

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) UK has reaffirmed its commitment to vehicle security, ensuring vehicles are protected and updated with the latest technology to prevent thefts.

Vehicles manufactured from 2022 onwards are built on JLR’s most advanced electrical architecture, meaning they have the latest security features and are proving resilient to theft: since January 2022, only 0.07% of new Range Rover and new Range Rover Sports on the road have been stolen, while only 0.3% of new Defenders have been affected since 2020. Babcock and Hanwha Aerospace sign partnership agreement MOU

Babcock has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hanwha Aerospace to offer enhanced capabilities across land, air and sea domains by bringing together the companies’ combined skills through a collaborative range of products, services and integrated solutions.

Under the agreement, which was signed during the President of Korea’s recent visit to the UK, the companies will work together to pursue global business development opportunities, with an initial focus on opportunities to cooperate on conventional submarines. More via Babcock International

Bentley awarded ‘Net Zero Plastic to Nature’ accreditation for a second year

Bentley Motors has been awarded ‘Net Zero Plastic to Nature’ status for a second consecutive year.

The internationally-recognised accreditation, from the climate company South Pole, followed a rigorous waste stewardship appraisal of the company’s campus and local operations. Bentley was the first car manufacturer to receive the ground-breaking certification in 2022 but South Pole’s latest endorsement reflects the firm’s ongoing efforts to support ambitious environmental commitments, across its manufacturing operations to the end-consumer.
