Concerns for future workforce as girls turn off from engineering and science
A stark gender gap in young people’s interest in engineering and science and a sharp decline in practical science have been identified through a new survey by the Royal Society in partnership with EngineeringUK, with support from Wellcome.
The third Science Education Tracker (it was previously run in 2016 and 2019) included specific questions about engineering for the first time in this 2023 survey. More via The Manufacturer
Manufacturing sentiment improves in April – CBI
Sentiment within the manufacturing sector improved in April and output expectations were the strongest for six months, according to the CBI’s latest quarterly Industrial Trends Survey.
Output volumes were broadly stable in the three months to April, following strong declines in output over the first quarter of 2024. More via CBI
Careers expo inspires next generation to ‘Think Dairy’
‘Dairy is much more than just milk’ – this was the take-home message for students who attended the Digital Dairy Chain’s inaugural ‘Think Dairy Careers Expo’ on 23 April.
The event was run in partnership with Harrison & Hetherington, at the Borderway Mart in Carlisle, to help address the skills shortage within the dairy industry. More via The Manufacturer
BAE Systems to collaborate with Cummins on transit bus hybrid drivetrain for 2027 and beyond
BAE Systems and Cummins Inc. have announced plans to collaborate on the integration and certification of a B hybrid-compatible diesel engine and hybrid electric drivetrain for the transit market, targeted for launch in 2027. The hybrid electric solution will continue to provide transit agencies with a proven and cost-effective technology that reduces fuel use and emissions.
In this effort, BAE Systems will supply its electric drive hardware to interface with the engine and form a full hybrid electric drivetrain, as well as provide engineering support and system integration expertise. More via BAE Systems
Review to shape next phase of The Alan Turing Institute
A new review outlining the impact and value of The Alan Turing Institute, the UK’s national institute for data science and AI, has been published.

Knitwear label John Smedley wants to bring manufacturing home
Ian Maclean, managing director and eighth generation leader of John Smedley, his family’s knitwear firm, is a firm believer that the UK can become a more competitive manufacturing location for luxury fashion brands.
From April, John Smedley, which has been based in Derbyshire since 1784, making it the world’s oldest operational knitwear factory, will open up for third-party manufacturing for the first time in more than 40 years. More via Financial Times
Ideal Heating invests £1m in southern England training hub
Ideal Heating has expanded its national training capabilities for supporting lower carbon and energy efficient heat with a new £1m site in Bedfordshire.
The manufacturer says the new Training and Technology Centre near Luton will form part of the company’s work to equip installers with the skills to fit and service systems such as domestic and commercial heat pumps. More via Heating & Ventilation News
The Pallet LOOP ramps up green pallets for May roll out
The Pallet LOOP, a member of BSW Group, has announced it is manufacturing tens of thousands of its distinctive bright green, circular economy pallets in readiness for them entering the building materials supply chain from May. The news follows the landmark announcement that British Gypsum is to become the first building products manufacturer to transport its materials on LOOP pallets. More via The Manufacturer
