Forterra has welcomed 12 new manufacturing and engineering apprentices as part of its ongoing investment in developing the next generation of skills across the business.

The September intake includes ten mechatronic maintenance technician apprentices, one machinist apprentice and one plater fabricator apprentice.

The mechatronic apprentices will be based across Forterra’s manufacturing sites including Measham, Desford, Hoveringham, Hams Hall and Kings Dyke. Their apprenticeship will focus on the installation, maintenance, and repair of machinery and industrial systems.

The machinist and plater fabricator apprentices will be based at Forterra Engineering Services in Whittlesey. The plater fabricator apprentice will develop skills in working with structural metal plates and sections before they are permanently welded, and the machinist apprentice will learn how to set up, programme, and operate precision machine tools.

The industry is facing a significant skills challenge, with employers needing to attract new talent into the sector while retaining and passing on the knowledge of an experienced workforce.

The latest intake builds on Forterra’s long-standing apprenticeship programme. Since 2016, the company has employed 77 operational apprentices, providing opportunities to develop careers in manufacturing and engineering.

Sarah Renton, Forterra’s Group People Director, said: “The industry is facing a significant skills challenge, with employers needing to attract new talent into the sector while retaining and passing on the knowledge of an experienced workforce.

“Apprenticeships allow us to develop the technical skills Forterra will need in the future, while giving people a strong route into engineering and manufacturing. By investing in apprentices and giving them the opportunity to learn alongside experienced colleagues, we can build the skills our business and the wider industry will rely on for years to come.”

Forterra has recruited apprentices across a range of disciplines in recent years, supporting the development of skills within the business and providing routes into careers across UK manufacturing.
