The Foundation Industries are worth £52bn to the UK economy.  The products that the Foundation Industries make – metals, glass, chemicals, polymers, paper and card, ceramics, cement and concrete – are vital to the functioning of a developed economy. They serve as the foundation that our cars, buildings, trains, medicines, packaging, food production, communications infrastructure, energy system, homes are built on. We cannot live without these products which are so indispensable to our daily lives. But the Foundation Industries together are responsible for some 10% of the UK’s CO2 emissions and have the opportunity to underpin greener growth.

The Foundation Industries Sustainability Consortium (FISC), part funded by Innovate UK, is a partnership of the UK’s major Foundation Industries’ Innovation and Research Centres – CPI, Glass Futures, Henry Royce Institute, Materials Processing Institute and Lucideon – collectively the catalysts of growth by the provision of routes to latest technology and net zero across the Foundation Industries.

The consortium’s flagship project, the Economic Material Innovation for Sustainable and Efficient use of Resources (EconoMISER), successfully secured funding to embed new capability across the consortium to support the development, decarbonisation and enhance productivity of the Foundation Industries.
