A manufacturing firm, Glacier Energy Manufacturing Limited has confirmed the closure of its Stockton-on-Tees site – one year after taking over a long-standing business.
The company said it has made the “difficult decision” to shut its facility in the town after falling into administration.
It comes just 14 months after the firm took over Teesside business Francis Brown, which was first established in 1903 and was rescued from administration last year.
Glacier Energy, a specialist provider of products, services, and engineered solutions for renewable and conventional energy markets, cited “unsustainable” losses and market challenges as the reason behind the closure.
It added that it made “significant efforts to turn around the business” over the last year. A spokesperson said: “We have made the difficult decision to close our manufacturing facility in Stockton on Tees, with one of our entities, Glacier Energy Manufacturing Limited, being placed into administration.
“The Stockton facility was previously Francis Brown, which we acquired out of administration in August 2024 in a pre-pack deal.
“Despite significant efforts to turn around the business, due to market challenges and the current fiscal regime, activity levels in the North Sea Oil and Gas market have been significantly impacted, and new energy markets slow to materialise. As a result, we have sustained substantial losses in the division in recent months, which have sadly become unsustainable.
“As a Group, we will continue to provide the repair and refurbishment of heat transfer equipment, specialist onsite machining services and inspection services for energy and industrial markets.”
Francis Brown was a well-respected fabrication business on Teesside for decades, and a leader in the manufacture of pressure vessels and structural fabrications.
Employees were transferred over from Francis Brown following the deal, including its directors.
