The Government has made an £11.2 million pot available for innovative off shore wind technology projects.
The funding will be delivered through the Technology Strategy Board and will be split into two parts, both of which aim to stimulate innovation throughout the offshore wind and marine supply chains.
Grant funding of £10m will be made available by TSB, in partnership with the Department for Energy and Climate Change, for feasibility studies (£3m) and component technologies development and demonstration projects (£7m).
Companies bidding for this funding should prove that their projects will minimise costs of renewable energy to the UK consumer and ensure the UK economy gains more benefit from increased supply to future off shore wind projects.
The second part of the £11.2m fund – constituting £1.2m – will establish knowledge transfer partnerships to build innovation capability in UK businesses. Partnerships will accelerate the transfer of expertise from academia to business in the fields of offshore wind, wave, tidal stream and tidal range energy. This part of the funding will be administered by TSB in conjunction with the Natural Environment Research Council.
The competition for feasibility studies opens on 5 November 2012 while the competition for development and demonstration projects will open early that month.

On November 21 Neil Morgan, head of energy at the Technology Strategy Board will chair an exclusive round table discussion on the UK’s future energy mix and UK manufacturing prospects at TM’s Manufacturer Directors’ Conference 2012.
The findings of this round table will be reported to delegates at the conference and subsequently published in a Sector Reflections Report.
