Made In Britain makes cross-party call for MPs to support their local manufacturers

Posted on 13 Sep 2024 by The Manufacturer

Ahead of the Party Conference season kicking off this weekend Made in Britain has issued a call for MPs from all political parties to take action to discover, collaborate with and promote their local manufacturers.

The trade association, which brings together domestic manufacturers by their licensed use of the official Made in Britain Trademark, is also calling on politicians across the country to advocate for policies that foster the growth and competitiveness of the British manufacturing sector as a whole.

The Made in Britain senior management team, including newly-elected Chairman Camilla Hadcock, will be present at the Labour, Conservative, and Liberal Democrat Party Conferences to highlight the Made in Britain Trademark and showcase its vibrant community of 2,100 manufacturers located across the four nations of the UK.

Made in Britain’s 3-point call to action for MPs

  1. Discover your local manufacturers: MPs are urged to identify and engage with manufacturers in their constituencies. Strong manufacturing companies drive innovation, stimulate the economies around them, and create local jobs. There’s also the ‘magnifier effect’ (thank you, Elon Musk), which demonstrates that for every direct job in manufacturing there are several more jobs created to service the initial job. At the Liberal Democrat, Labour and Conservative Party Conferences over the next few weeks, we will be making it easy for MPs by fast-tracking them to a contact list of Made in Britain manufacturers within a 20 mile radius of their constituency head office.
  2. Champion economic and social value (ESV): We call on MPs to advocate for policies that prioritise supply chain resilience, sustainability and social responsibility in manufacturing – all of which strengthen the sector and help advance the UK towards a greener, more equitable economy. Made in Britain recognises the vital role of British manufacturers in driving an environmentally sustainable and socially responsible economy in the UK. Our commitment includes efforts to close the ‘circularity gap’ by promoting successful pro-environmental actions of Made in Britain companies and encouraging the production of British products with less reliance on virgin raw materials and increased use of recycled or reusable materials.
  3. Support British manufacturing in Parliament: MPs can play a vital role in supporting manufacturers by advocating for policies that allow them access to the infrastructure and support they need to succeed as businesses. MPs are urged to advocate for policies that provide for manufacturers the legislative environment they need to thrive on the domestic market – and on export markets too.

MPs attending these conferences will have the opportunity to learn about the origins of British goods and the domestic manufacturers behind them. They will also gain insights from the Made in Britain Autumn British Manufacturing Barometer, which focuses on the sector’s contribution to sustainability and social responsibility.

Made in Britain CEO John Pearce said: “Manufacturers are the backbone of our economy, driving UK innovation and providing vital jobs across the country. Now, more than ever, it’s crucial that MPs take an active role in championing these businesses and ensuring they have the support they need to compete on the global stage. By engaging with local manufacturers and advocating for policies that foster supply chain localisation, improved access and green growth, every single MP can contribute to unlocking the full potential of UK manufacturing – building a more sustainable and prosperous future for all of us.”
