Tenaris has begun domestic production of a proprietary steel grade at its Sault Ste. Marie Industrial Centre in Ontario, strengthening its manufacturing capabilities in Canada and supporting the evolving requirements of the country’s oil and gas industry.
The company is now producing its TN 95EY steel grade locally, which has been developed for demanding oil and gas applications, including wells operating under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions. The material is also designed for sour service applications and unconventional oil and gas developments, including operations in the Montney and Duvernay formations in Western Canada.
According to Tenaris, bringing the grade into domestic production will enable it to respond more directly to the needs of Canadian energy operators while expanding the availability of locally manufactured products.
As energy operators advance into more demanding environments, customers are looking for pipe engineered to deliver reliable performance under increasingly challenging conditions.
The TN 95EY steel grade delivers the strength and performance needed for these applications and producing it in Canada allows us to respond directly to our customers’ evolving needs while strengthening our commitment to Canadian manufacturing.
Martín Castro, President of Tenaris in Canada
Introducing the steel grade required collaboration between specialist teams across Tenaris’s Canadian operations, including manufacturing, metallurgy, information technology and laboratory testing. The project involved adapting existing manufacturing processes and implementing extensive testing and tracking procedures for each pipe to ensure the required quality standards were maintained.
Pablo Toy, Commercial Vice President of Tenaris in Canada, said domestic production would provide another locally manufactured option for the country’s energy sector.
“Having the TN 95EY steel grade produced domestically adds another locally-made option while connecting domestic manufacturing capabilities with the needs of our country’s energy industry from coast-to-coast,” he said.
Investment in Canadian manufacturing
The development forms part of Tenaris’s wider commitment to expanding its Canadian manufacturing footprint. The company employs more than 1,300 people across its Canadian operations and has invested more than C$355m since 2020.
In May 2026, Tenaris announced a further C$306m joint investment with the federal and Ontario governments to modernise and expand its manufacturing capabilities.
Its Canadian operations are anchored by the Sault Ste. Marie Industrial Centre, which the company describes as the only facility in North America producing both seamless and welded steel pipes under one roof.
