Dorchester-based Loop Technology has developed a self-contained robot cell as an innovative solution to industrial robotics, based on machine vision and motion control systems.
According to Loop Technology, its self-contained robotics cell was borne from a collaboration with the Manufacturing Technology centre (MTC), the independent research & technology organisation aiming to bridge the gap between academia and industry.
Loop Technology was assigned by the MTC to design and develop a self-contained robot cell, capable of providing a flexible development and demonstration platform for future expansion.
The automated cell system was created in a modular format and reportedly allows rapid integration with a variety of robotics, hoping to remove the barriers of entry for automation novices.
For many businesses, investing in robots is considered as a long-term growth strategy, helping them to become more cost-and-quality competitive. When investing in robots, manufacturers are urged to consider no only the labour costs, wages, insurance, and so on, but also the savings afforded by reducing rework and waste – shortening potential payback periods.
Loop Technology’s project manager, Peter Eyre commented: “I’m sure this cell will be very popular with organisations breaking into the sector for the first time and more established robotic operators looking to improve the efficiency of their development processes.”
What’s most exciting about the project, according to Eyre, is that manufacturers will be encouraged to embrace automation, and enter into the industrial robotics space.
