Clothing manufacturer Xamax is undertaking ambitious growth plans following a £400,000 factory investment that has seen sales soar by 40%.

The workwear and promotional clothing company, based in Wakefield, said the sales over the last 12 months has enabled it to update its Roundwood Industrial Estate site.

As part of the modernisation, it has replaced old machinery and created a modern frontage at the site where it employs 43 people.

Xamax utilised support from the Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS) for support in the expansion and to help build understanding of new market opportunities.

The company’s operations director, Gareth Thompson, said a more proactive approach towards the future was a key reason for Xamax’s progress.

“The banking crisis made us look long and hard at our business and where we wanted to go. A lot of the changes we were making were reactive to market conditions and we knew we needed to adopt a more proactive approach.“

“This is where MAS came into the equation. Working with one of the organisation’s manufacturing advisors and a specialist consultant, we were able to take a step back and look at the bigger picture and the sort of processes we needed to put in place to monitor growth and, importantly, profitability.“

As one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of embroidered and printed clothing for business, local authorities and the general public, Xamax has more than 10,000 different clients.

It produces more than 500 different items, ranging from t-shirts and sweatshirts to hi-vis jackets and footwear, while offering a ‘design your own’ service for bespoke orders.
