A group of apprentices from GE Aviation Wales have successfully completed their apprenticeships at the overhaul facility based in Nantgarw.
The 24 apprentices were recognised at the site’s annual graduation ceremony which was attended by the Secretary of State for Wales, the Rt. Honourable Stephen Crabb.
Having qualified, the graduates have secured employment at the facility and will support the four main engine types which GE Aviation Wales specialises in servicing, including the GE90, the world’s most powerful aircraft engine.
As part of the apprenticeship scheme, GE works in partnership with Coleg Y Cymoedd, formally Coleg Morgannwg, to create the work-based Welsh Government apprenticeship scheme. Throughout the three years, apprentices rotate across the business to give them a broader understanding of how the company operates, as well as developing the skills needed for them to achieve their formal qualification. The apprenticeship combines college and work-based training up to NVQ Level 3 and a recognised Technical Certificate plus Key Skills.
Secretary of State for Wales, Stephen Crabb said: “Apprenticeships are a fantastic way for young people to take their first steps onto the job ladder. GE Aviation Wales’ apprenticeship programme is based on a long term vision for the development of their staff and is a model of the kind of schemes we want to see all across Wales.
“I was so impressed with the energy and commitment of the graduates that I met today who will be helping to drive growth across the UK aerospace industry in the years ahead.”
Participation in the Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is also offered to all apprentices. The scheme encourages community volunteering and focuses on team and character building whilst developing personal attributes including confidence and communication skills.
